Healthy Schools

Led by Mrs Pearce

We were one of the first schools in Portsmouth to be awarded Healthy Schools Status in 2002. We have continued to work on areas within the standard and were successfully revalidated in 2007.

We are currently working towards enhanced Healthy School status and feel that the standards are embedded in our every day practice. We promote eating fruit, drinking water, daily physical activity including brain gym, tending our extensive school grounds, re cycling/ composting alongside personal social and health expectations in all areas of school life. We are following the new SEAL curriculum to further improve provision within these areas. Come into school and see the wonderful displays support this. (see image below and click on it for more information) Mrs Hawkins has put up our recent display in the office area with the theme of 'Its good to be me'. We have developed a natural woodland, wildflower hill, vegetable garden, fruit garden and cultivated flower borders all of which are tended by the children.

Our most recent project (Spring 2008), has involved writing to B&Q to ask for support with planting adn developing our school grounds. Mrs Pearce was thrilled when we were given £50 to spend. She help the school council to plan how to spend the money - which will be for each class to have a raised border area, which they will be able plant their choice of crops/flowers etc and then tend them during Summer term - we look forward to seeing what each class chooses to grow.

Fruit scheme

We have been taking part in schemes to provide mid morning fruit for the children for several years. Children are offered both fruit and vegetables before morning playtime. Adults encourage children to try new tastes and cut fruit up to make it more accessible while showing the children by example how enjoyable fruit is. We also hold fruit and vegetable days to enrich both the childrens diet and knowledge of healthy eating. We grow fruit and vegetables in the school gardens which the children nurture, harvest and eat.

Eco schools

We have achieved both green and bronze status in the Eco schools project which has involved work on recycling, water conservation and awareness and improving the internal and external environment. We have teams of litter pickers who carry out checks on class areas and the school grounds. We periodically raise awareness about turning off electric lights and taps to conserve both power and water.

We recently held a water awareness day as a harvest celebration that involved understanding how important water is to us and to people in Africa who do not have sufficient clean water. We used this opportunity to raise money for Wateraid and were delighted with the huge support we received from parents and children.
